Going Grey

June 9th, 2020 at 02:02 am

In our county hair salons aren’t yet open. I haven’t been covering my grey hair growth except with a temporary solution when I’m forced to do a video conference. I have to say I’m starting to like the grey and I’m seriously thinking of keeping it. My hair is now naturally salt & pepper with the salt/pepper proportions different in some places.

Once salons open I may even ask my hairdresser to dye it all grey and then I’ll just have some dark roots but less over time. A while back I saw a model online with grey hair even longer than mine and I liked the look. (Rosemarie Fern is the name in case you want to search.) I think that influenced me to break that unwritten rule that middle-aged women shouldn’t have long grey hair.

Anyone else considering a permanent switch to grey?

I've never colored my hair, and yes, I do have some gray! It sounds like you have a great plan to transition. And it will save you some money.

I haven't colored my hair in ages, I had made the decision to stop, but the grey has been annoying me more and more as it takes over. I just feel like I look so old this way, older than I am. Maybe if it was all grey it would be different, or if it were silver like my mom's. As it is, the sister that is 6 years older than me looks younger than me because she colors her hair. But it might just be bugging me because it is all frazzled with split ends that it looks awful. I want to color it, but I think I might regret getting on that train again. It still has far too much auburn brown in it for me to dye it all grey.

I won't go grey. I have too dark hair and my mom still dyes it at 70 years old.

I'm just not ready to go all grey. There are some grey shades that look really pretty, my mom's hair was a beautiful light silvery grey color, but mine is much darker and very spotty. I build this in to my budget so the money isn't a factor.

LAL, you made me laugh. My MIL used to say "I have to color my hair. I can't go grey before my mama!"

And Wink, you're right - some shades of grey are prettier than others. I figure that if I don't like my natural color, I could either dye it a prettier grey or back to my used-to-be-natural dark brown.

Back when I was letting my grey hair grow out, my hairdresser said she couldn't dye my colored hair grey to match my roots; it wasn't possible. Maybe things have changed now that grey hair is more popular.

I was an early grey-er and I dyed my hair for about 20 years and now have been natural for about 20 years. I have to say that my hair looks a heck of a lot better now than it did when I was dying it. Healthier, shinier and REAL!

Those of you who say your hair isn't a pretty grey color, it's really just a matter of time. When you have more white hairs than pigmented hairs, you will have that pretty silvery look.

I wanted to add, I'm letting my hair grow now due to the shutdown, but I'm going to let it keep going to shoulder length. I like it.

You're probably right CB. I just assumed that it could be dyed grey. It may be that it can't because that's a lighter color.

I have not done anything to color my hair in about 25 years and am going grey. I am fine with it.

You can dye grey but it has to be bleached first if you are not a pale blonde, which is really harsh on your hair, especially if you have a dark natural color because they might have to bleach it twice.

Ah, you're probably right LR. I don't know if I'd go through that. I'll see how the natural color looks.

I dye my hair. It is a dark brown, almost black. If it wasn’t for the patch of grey directly at the front of my hairline I wouldn’t care, but it’s a little too prominent for me to be okay with. I just dyed it yesterday & the last time prior was in January.

This seems to be one of my major obsessions lately, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one thinking about it. I've been coloring my grey for about 10 years--my hair is sort of medium brown. But I haven't touched it since February and now it's very grey, maybe two inches worth, at the roots. And it's very long. But it is also in the best condition it's been in ages, and while I think it bothers me, I'm really on the fence with whether I'll color it again or not.

Like you, I let my hair go during al the quarantine time. I usually color it myself, and hate doing it. At first, I didn't think the gray (really more like white) looked that bad, and since I wasn't commuting to work, I let it go for I think 9 weeks or so, but then I felt like it was making me look old, so I did color it a few weeks ago.
